IMCA MODIFIEDS AND PASSCAR SERIES’ AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY SATURDAY!
By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, July 10, 2017) For the first time in six weeks, the IMCA Modifieds and the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks and American Factory Stocks will be back on the famous Perris Auto Speedway half-mile clay oval this Saturday night, July 15th. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM and racing will start at 7:00.

Good car counts and great racing have been the norm through the first four races of the 2017 campaign. Especially in the IMCA Modifieds. The PAS has been drawing the biggest modified fields in the state this year and the competition has been the toughest in PAS history. As word spreads of the large size IMCA fields and the level of competition grows, more out of town drivers have been showing up to take on The PAS regulars and get a trophy from the famous Riverside County speed plant.

“In our previous 21-seasons, we have never seen competition as good as this at our stock car shows,” promoter Don Kazarian said. “The racing has been great in all of the classes. Especially the Modifieds. You win a modified main at The PAS now and you know you have really accomplished something. Good tough racing that has not only been a pleasure for the drivers to being involved in, but also for the fans in the stands. They love it.”

With the season winding down for the IMCA Modified point battles (IMCA points end in September), Big Bear’s Billy Wormsbecker still sits on top of the standings. However, even the slightest bobble by the 41-year-old past Victorville track champion could cost him the crown. Yucaipa’s Chuck Becker, the 2016 PAS IMCA champ, is only three-points behind. Kevin Hocking of Huntington Beach, the 2015 champ, is 12-points out of the top spot. Fourth and fifth in the standings is the father/daughter team of Mike and Brenda Kirby of Bullhead City, Arizona.

Fans are thrilled with the three abreast and as the photo above shows, sometimes four abreast action the IMCA Modifieds have been supplying this year. Please give photo credit to Vane Ledgerwood.

The only IMCA driver in the top five with more than one win this year is Mike Kirby and he has taken home the winner’s trophy twice. Imperial Beach’s Joseph Altig and Steven Fangmeyer of Nuevo are the other two winners thus far in 2017. Point leader Wormsbecker’s best finish was a second in the season opener in March.

Garden Grove’s Bryce Mulvey, who sat out a couple of years before returning for 2017, won his first main event in the PASSCAR Street Stocks at the last race on June 3rd. He became the only driver other than Riverside’s Luke Dodd to win a Street Stock main this year. Despite his triumph at the last race, Mulvey trails Dodd by 39-points in the standings. Temecula’s Blaine Whitson is hot on Mulvey’s tail and is only three-points out of the runner-up spot. Past Street Stock champs Stefan Davies and Riverside’s Eddie Gurwell round out the top five.

Garden Grove’s Bryce Mulvey, shown here on the inside of Coalinga’s Chris Smith, won his first ever Street Stock race on June 3rd. Please give photo credit to Doug Allen.

Another tight battle is shaping up in the PASSCAR Super Stocks where Fred Estrada holds a narrow two-point lead over Sheffield, England Native Andy Moreton. Estrada has won two of the first four main events of the campaign including the last one in June. Beaumont’s Ricky Lee and Huntington Beach veteran Patrick Tone are third and fourth. Defending champ Mike Lerwell of El Cajon and two-time champion Dennis Wooldridge of Riverside are tied for fifth.

Riverside’s Fred Estrada, shown here leading the pack off turn two, has won two of the first four main events and leads the Super Stock point standings. Please give photo credit to Vane Ledgerwood.

The biggest point lead in any class belongs to James Altman Jr. The Lake Elsinore teen finished second in the season opening Factory Stock main and since then has won the last three in a row. Norco 15-year-old Alyssa Smith, who missed the last race due to a softball commitment, is second in the championship standings, but is 87-points behind Altman. Nuevo’s Mike Burks and Menifee’s Kris Carnish are tied for third. Fifth spot is Jeff Elder of Redlands.

Lake Elsinore’s James Altman Jr. finished second in the first Factory Stock main event of the year and since then has won the last three in a row. Please give photo credit to Doug Allen.
