HEAVY EMPHASIS ON CHILDREN AT SATURDAY’S PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY PASSCAR OPENER!
By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, April 16, 2019)
When the PASSCAR Stock Car Series and IMCA Modifieds finally kick off the 2019 season this Saturday night, April 20th, at Perris Auto Speedway, there will be a heavy emphasis on the children in the grandstands. At intermission, children will be allowed onto the racetrack to collect Easter candy and meet all the drivers. And, the first 20 kids to sign up will be matched up with a driver in the Modified main event. At the conclusion of that main, the child matched up with the winning driver will receive a trophy and pose for a photo with the winner on the track. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 P.M. and the first race will begin at 7:00.

Luke Dodd will be racing the #98 in the Street Stocks and Modifieds this year. Doug Allen photo.

Saturday’s exciting program will be comprised of four different classes. The PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, American Factory Stocks and the IMCA Modifieds. The competitors will be chomping at the bit as the season opener has been rained out two times. It was originally scheduled for February 9th. After that date succumbed to the weather, promoter Don Kazarian decided to stage a doubleheader on March 9th, but once again Mother Nature intervened and had her way with the track. Kazarian thus added this week’s race to the schedule and another on November 16th.

“We wanted to be sure these drivers get their full schedule in, so we had to reschedule the two canceled races,” Kazarian said. “They have not raced at The PAS for nearly six months. And, or those who do not travel to other tracks, they have not raced at all. All the drivers should be chomping at the bit to get going. We expect a very exciting night of racing.”

The part with the children is tied to the tracks highly successful Halloween nights the past three seasons. Modified veteran Steven “Bam Bam” Fangmeyer suggested they do the same deal of inviting the kids onto the track to meet with the drivers and collect candy at intermission. He also suggested pairing kids up with the drivers like they did in days gone by at the sprint car races.

“The Halloween night with trick or treaters on the track has become our biggest night for the PASSCAR/IMCA shows,” Kazarian noted. “We hope it does just as well this week for Easter. The kids pairing up with drivers should also make it extra fun for them. They will sign up, draw a number and will be paired with a driver for the main. It will give them something extra to get excited about and to cheer for.”

One of the new cars in action on Saturday night will be the #98 IMCA Modified of Riverside’s Luke Dodd. The proprietor of Luke’s Transmissions in Rubidoux, Dodd has won more main events than any stock car driver in the track’s history. In addition to his main event wins, he has five Street Stock track championships. However, Saturday night will see him in a Modified at The PAS for the first time. As always, he will be in his #98 Street Stock.

Among the foes expected to try to thwart Dodd’s efforts for a sixth Street Stock title will be longtime nemesis Blaine Whitson of Temecula, Chris Leventis of Rancho Palos Verdes, 16-year-old Norco high school student Alyssa Smith, who finished third as a rookie in the Street Stocks last season, and three-time champ Curtis Dietzsch of Riverside.

Yucaipa’s Chuck Becker, who has won Modified championships the last three years at The PAS (one IMCA and two PAS), will be back to try and make it four in a row in 2019. On Saturday, Becker, who began racing over 40-years ago and who has owned the car he drove to his PAS titles, will be driving a car owned by Long Beach native and now Roseville, California resident John Krebs. Among others In 2019, Becker can expect a stiff challenge from 2018 runner-up Terry Hershberger of Corona, four-time PAS main event winner Fangmeyer of Stanton and 2016 Lucas Oil Modified Series champion Matthew Hicks of Lakeside.

El Cajon’s Mike Lerwell is expected to be back to vie for his third track championship in the Super Stock class. 2018 runner-up Fred Estrada of Riverside, who was a regular at Ascot in the 1980s, Beaumont’s Ricky Lee, two-time class champ Dennis Wooldridge of Riverside and Norco’s Tom Smith (father of Alyssa) should all be contenders for the crown.

In the Factory Stocks, Temecula’s Cameron Veatch is expected to be back on the track on Saturday night. In 2018, he beat El Cajon’s Todd Fassler by a single point to claim the class championship. Nuevo’s Mike Burks, Swede Ogren of Anza and veteran Kris Carnish of Menifee should all battle Veatch for the title this year.

Tickets for Saturday’ show are $15.00 for adults. For active military with proper id and their spouse or date, it will be $5.00 each. Teens 13-18 with their school id and kids 6-12 get in for $5.00. Children 5 and under are free. Parking on the fairgrounds is $8.00.
