80-YEAR-OLD J.D. WILSON COMPETES AND WINS
IN DEMOCROSS AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY!
By Scott
Daloisio
(Perris, CA, May 29, 2019)
When it comes to Democross at Perris Auto
Speedway, one of the drivers who is
perennially tough to beat is Costa Mesa’s
J.D. Wilson. Like a lot of other drivers,
Wilson has a lot of wins. Unlike other
drivers, he is 80-years-old. Fans can get
a look at the longtime racer in action
this Saturday night when LKQ Pick Your
Part presents Night of Destruction #3. In
addition to Wilson in the Democross,
Saturday’s program will also include
Figure 8 racing, a Figure 8 Trailer race,
Mini Stocks on a road course and Double
Deckers.
The attached
photo of J.D. Wilson is by Doug Allen
“J.D. called
me one day last week,” longtime Perris
announcer Scott Daloisio said with a
laugh. “He was telling me that I was
announcing to the fans that he was in his
upper 70s and he wanted me to stop doing
that. I thought he was mad, but then he
told me to tell them his real age which is
now 80!”
Wilson, who
was a regular in his popular #V8 stock car
at Ascot and who is a retired commercial
airline pilot, still carries the same
number on his car to this day. However, he
is now competing in the rough and tumble
world of Democross, which is a race that
essentially has no rules. Drivers are
allowed to ram other cars or spin them
out.
Three years
ago, at the ripe young age of 77, Wilson
beat the younger drivers and won the
Democross championship. Always one of the
favorites, he scored the win in the 2019
season opener on February 23rd. However,
on April 27th, he was crashed out early in
the race. Thus, he is currently fifth in
the season-long Democross point standings.
“Anything goes
in Democross,” Daloisio said. “It is dirt
track racing’s form of MMA and it is not
for the faint of heart. There are grinding
crashes every race. To see J.D. doing it
at 80 is amazing. He is one of, it not
the, fastest guys out there, so the other
drivers are always trying to take him out.
He has been clobbered big time over the
years. Those crashes were tough. It is a
testament to the shape J.D. is in that he
climbs out every time and comes back for
more. When you look at him, you would
never believe he is 80-years-old.”
The driver
Wilson and everyone else in Democross is
chasing is point leader Kyle Cox of
Huntington Beach. Actually, the drivers in
the Figure 8 Trailer class and the Overall
Ironman championship are also chasing the
unassuming 31-year-old as he leads in
those classes as well. Last year Cox won
the championships in all three of the
classes. The only title he did not win
last year was the Figure 8. He is
currently second to Beaumont based
respiratory therapist Jesse Gordon in the
Figure 8s after two races this year.
In the new and
fast-growing Mini Stock class, Chino’s
Alan Mahoney and Michael Hartsfield of
Menifee are currently tied for first in
the championship standings. Like the
Democross, the Mini Stocks are a full
contact class. The only difference is they
run on a road course instead of the ¼
mile.
At the season
opener in February, the new Double Decker
class was the hit of the show. This
despite only two cars being ready! After
missing the April race, the Double Deckers
will be back this Saturday with at least
one more car added to the field. The class
features one car stacked on top of
another. The driver in the car on the
bottom controls the gas pedal and the
brakes. The driver in the car on top
controls the steering. And, there is no
communication between the two during the
races!!!
Saturday’s
race will benefit the June 8th American
Cancer Society’s “Up Down N’ Dirty Run 4 A
Cure Mud Race” at the track and through
the SoCal Fair and Event Center. For those
