THIRD GENERATION DRIVER READY FOR PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY’S 25TH SEASON OPENER
By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, February 25, 2020) When Perris Auto Speedway kicks off its historic 25th Anniversary season with Night of Destruction #1 presented by LKQ Pick Your Part on Saturday, March 7th, one of the favorites to end up in victory circle will be Tustin, California’s Kyle Cox. In the past two seasons, the third-generation driver has captured five of a possible eight championships at the famous Riverside County speed plant.

Third-generation driver Kyle Cox is now a 5-time champion at Perris Auto Speedway. Doug Allen Photo.

Fans who have been around dirt track racing in Southern California for a long time should be familiar with the Cox name. Kyle’s grandfather Earl Cox Sr. was one of the legendary Figure 8 drivers at Ascot Park in Gardena. His uncle Earl Jr. and his father Kevin also raced at Ascot, so it was only natural that Kyle, who raced BMX and go-karts, would follow in their footsteps.

“My dad and my uncle always pitted for my grandpa back in the Ascot days,” Cox said on Monday afternoon. “We (Kyle and his dad) started going out to Perris to watch my Uncle Earl have fun on the Figure 8 track and we thought we should probably start doing that. Now we are starting our fifth season.”

A relative newcomer to auto racing, Cox, the father of young daughters Everly and Haven, adapted quickly and won the Figure 8 Trailer and Demo Cross titles in 2018. In addition, he won the overall Iron Man championship that combined points for Figure 8, Figure 8 Trailer and Demo Cross classes. Last year he became the first-ever driver to win back to back Demo Cross and Iron Man titles. And, he missed doubling up in the Figure 8 Trailer class by a mere six-points.

Cox got his first taste of the wild Night of Destruction craziness in a Ford Ranger pickup truck. However, he felt he needed more speed and purchased a 1975 Camaro from fellow competitor “Dangerous” Dan Pachella. He quickly painted it purple and plastered the #9 on its side. He has been winning races and championships ever since.

Many outsiders who see the Night of Destruction events that Cox competes in probably figure it is just show up and unload your car on the night. The reality is quite the contrary. It is like any other form of racing and it occupies a lot of nights burning the midnight oil on the car in the garage and mental preparedness for when one gets on the track.

“It is just preparation and mentally being ready for everything,” the 32-year-old driver said. “Just finishing the races and being consistent is my whole key every single time. That is the number one goal. Sometimes there are 30 of us out there for Demo Cross and it is just carnage from the time the green flag drops. My main issue is to survive the chaos. I drive like a grandpa and just put around and dodge everything. As the race goes on, I just start going (faster).”

Cox, who drives a beer truck for Harbor Distributing during the day, will once again be joined by his uncle and his father when the first green flag flies on the 7th. In addition, another family member, cousin Josh Foote who has helped Cox in the pits the past few seasons, is trading in his wrenches for a firesuit and will be a rookie in the rough and tumble world of Night of Destruction.

Cox would like to thank the following for making his 2020 racing efforts possible. Boondocks Irish Pub, CST Bearing Co., Moyer’s Auto Repair and Cox Racing.

After the opening night race on the 7th, the PASSCAR Stock Cars and IMCA Modifieds will lift the lid on their season on March 14th. Sprint cars will open their 2020 PAS campaign with the NOS Energy Drinks World of Outlaws and the Amsoil USAC/CRA Series on March 28.
