PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY IMCA MODIFIED CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE DECIDED SATURDAY NIGHT
By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, September 14, 2021) Perris Auto Speedway will crown it’s first 2021 champion this Saturday night, September 18th, when the IMCA Modifieds hit the track along with the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, and the American Factory Stocks. The IMCA point season closes on September 26th. Thus, Saturday’s show will be the final night for Modified drivers at The PAS to compile points for the title. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race will get the green flag at 7:00.

With 40-points allotted to the winner of the IMCA main event, four drivers have a mathematical chance at winning the title. To show how competitive the season has been, those four drivers only accounted for two wins in the seven previous races this year. Buena Park’s Billy Griffin, who won the 2013 PASSCAR Modified championship at the track, currently sits on top of the points heap with a total of 251. That is a mere three points more than second place driver Tom “Slick” Smith of Norco. Consistent driving has been Griffin’s key. Thus far he has not won a main event. In fact, he only has two top three finishes. However, he has only finished out of the top five times twice and has never finished worse than seventh this year. The other two drivers with a mathematical chance at the title are Justin Dunn of Riverside, who is currently third in the standings, and Carla Laney of Torrance who is fourth. Laney, whose son Cody won the IMCA Super Nationals Modified main event in Boone, Iowa last Saturday, will not be on hand as she is racing at Iowa’s Marshalltown Speedway this weekend. Dunn may also be racing in the Midwest.

Smith and Dunn, with one win each, are the only drivers in the top five in points with victories this year. Smith’s 19-year-old daughter Alyssa also has one first place finish. The only drivers with more than one triumph in the modified class in 2021 are Bakersfield’s Austin Kiefer and Jake Pike of Pahrump, Nevada. Each of them placed first two times.

Griffin has a chance to win three titles at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval this year. If he prevails on Saturday and takes the IMCA title, he will be the leader in the track's overall modified points with two non-IMCA races to follow. Also, coming into Saturday’s race, he has a narrow two-point lead over Riverside’s Tyson Talkington in the PASSCAR Super Stock Class. Counting Saturday, that class has three races to go in the 2021 season. Unlike in the Modifieds, Griffin has two victories in the Super Stocks this year. Hemet’s David Lord, who is third in the standings, leads the class with three wins. Lord, who is 16-points out of first, may have seen his championship aspirations go up in smoke when he missed the August 14th race while fighting the California wildfires. Ron Bartels of Marina Del Rey and 2019 champion Fred Estrada of Riverside are fourth and fifth.

With three races to go in the season, the Street Stock and Factory Stock point leaders have a little more breathing room at the top of the standings in their respective classes. Moreno Valley’s Brandon Kelly, who is seeking his first PAS title, is 14-points in front of three-time track champion Curtis Dietzsch of Riverside in the Street Stocks. James Altman of Lake Elsinore and Murrieta’s Stefan Davies are tied for third some 23-points behind the leader. Kelly’s father Doug is fifth. Temecula’s Cameron Veatch is attempting to win his third straight American Factory Stock championship. He has a 10-point lead over Nuevo’s Mike Burks heading into Saturday’s race. Jason Cook of Hemet, Swede Ogren of Anza and Darren Myers of Anaheim round out the top five.

As always, The PAS will have one of its most popular weekly traditions on Saturday. At intermission, all the drivers and cars will come to the front straightaway for the on-track autograph session. All fans will be welcome on the track to get autographs and the drivers will have free candy to pass out to all the kids in attendance.

Adult tickets for Saturday’s race are $20.00. Kids aged 6-12 get in for $5.00 and children 5 and under are free. There will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the track ticket window on Saturday. This event will not sell out. For those who wish to purchase online tickets for this Saturday or any other 2021 Perris Auto Speedway race, please visit tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. The fairgrounds charges $10.00 for parking.
