IMCA SPORT COMPACT RACING COMING TO PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY IN 2022! By Scott Daloisio (Perris, CA, January 23, 2022) Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian has announced that a new class will be racing at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval in 2022. Starting with the March 19th PASSCAR season-opener, the IMCA Sport Compacts will be a part of all eight stock car shows. Ken McWilliams IMCA Sport Compact ready for action in 2021 at the Mohave Valley Raceway. IMCA Sport Compacts are coming to The PAS starting on March 19th. “The IMCA Sport Compact class has been growing here in the west the past few seasons,” Kazarian said. “I had already been thinking about adding them to the show. Then last August Ken McWilliams approached me about making them part of our stock car program. He is a regular competitor in the class and travels to several different tracks to compete. What I had learned by studying and what I talked to Ken about convinced me to add the class.” Being that the class will be IMCA sanctioned, the drivers will be running for more than just a Perris Auto Speedway track championship. They will be competing against hundreds of drivers for the IMCA National Sport Compact Championship and for the California State title as well. “IMCA has been promoting races since 1925,” the Perris head honcho stated. “It has a great reputation for putting on top-quality races. It added sport compacts to its portfolio in 2007 and the class has grown by leaps and bounds. We expect it to be an extremely popular addition to our shows and think the class is going to explode with entries once people see them. It will be a good way for lots of people to get on the track without spending a ton of money to race. As well as new locals, we will see some out-of-town drivers show up when they can to chase state and national points.” Second-generation driver McWilliams started racing at The PAS two decades ago in the hornet class before progressing to street stocks and Night of Destruction events (he was the 2016 and 2017 trailer figure 8 champion) at the Riverside County speed plant. In 2021, he branched out and started racing IMCA Sport Compacts at other tracks. “I think it has potential to grow and it is easy to get into,” McWilliams answered when asked why he pushed Kazarian to start hosting the IMCA Sport Compacts. “It is low budget and more and more tracks in California are running them. I definitely think it could be one of the largest car count classes in the next few years.” “If you do it yourself with a cage and everything, you can probably get into it for $1500,” McWilliams stated when asked for the approximate cost to get started. “You just go buy a car you see for sale cheap in your neighborhood, add a cage, and you are ready to go.” For those interested in racing an IMCA Sport Compact, the rules are available at the following link https://www.imca.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/2022-Sport-Compact-Rules.pdf With the sport compacts joining the PASSCAR nights, the IMCA Modifieds will move over and race on the same card as the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars at all races from April through October.
