PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY IS SWITCHING TO A GRASS SURFACE IN 2023 By Scott Daloisio (Perris, CA, April 1, 2022) Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian has announced a track surface change for the 2023 season. Beginning at the first race in March, all races will be conducted on a grass surface. Believing this is the wave of the future, Kazarian is pleased to be the first track in the USA to race on sod. The longtime promoter came up with the idea while checking out grass track motorcycle races in Europe on YouTube. Extremely popular in England and Germany, grass track racing is a well-liked thing to do on Sunday afternoons. The sport utilizes long-track speedway motorcycles on big tracks. Kazarian is not sure if cars race on grass tracks overseas, but he is intrigued by the idea. “I was watching a grass track motorcycle race from England on YouTube,” Kazarian said. “It was wild and extremely exciting to see. It did not hit me at first, but a few days later I started thinking it would be great to see cars racing on grass. So, we are going to do it.” As soon as the final race of the 2022 season ends in November, Kazarian and his crew will begin preparing the surface for the grass. The longtime promoter speculates that it will take a lot of work and a lot of grass seed. By the time the season opens in early March, the grass should be ready to go. “We plan on caring for the surface all offseason to ensure the track is ready to go,” Kazarian stated while pointing to a diagram behind his desk. “The track will have three distinct types of grass on it. We plan to have tougher grass like Bermuda on the outside. As of yet, I am not sure what we are planting on the middle or lower grooves. Still trying to find out what will work best. We have a lot of time to figure it out.” Once the grass is in, Kazarian plans to bring in some extra help to maintain it. A large herd of cows and goats will roam the track throughout the week to help keep the grass from growing too tall. And they will also naturally fertilize it. “I have already made plans to bring in a couple of hundred head of cattle and some goats to help maintain the surface,” the innovative promoter said. “The cattle and goats will supply other streams of revenue as well. Along with the usual shirts, caps, and jackets that we sell in the souvenir stand, we will also have 50-pound bags of manure for sale. And, we will have the freshest burgers and birria tacos in all of racing.” While the cows and goats will have the run of the place Sunday through Friday, Kazarian realized it could be a serious issue if one or more of the bovine or goats stepped onto the track surface during a race. So, he is erecting gates on the two openings to the pits. On race morning all the cattle and goats will be herded into the pits for their own safety. When queried as to the safety of people in the pits with the cows and goats in the infield, Kazarian expected no problems. “We are only bringing cows in, no bulls,” he affirmed with a nod. “It should not be an issue. The only precaution I am recommending for crew members, drivers, and officials is to invest in a good pair of rubber boots.” All the track classes will be racing on the green stuff once the season opens. That includes sprint cars, modifieds, stock cars, and Night of Destruction. In addition, to help the cows and goats with their work, lawnmowers will race once a month. Once he got downwind that lawnmowers would be racing, past champion driver and now USAC/CRA Series race director Tony Jones said he is coming out of retirement. “I have to give it to Don Kazarian,” the 2000 Oval Nationals and 2007 USAC/CRA champion said. “He thinks of everything, and I cannot wait to be back in competition next year. I am trying to find a huge tractor seat to fit on my lawnmower right now. I am going for that championship.” Kazarian does not anticipate any alterations to the current rules for any of the tracks racing classes. “With the exception of banning cowcatchers, I do not anticipate any rule changes for the classes,” Kazarian affirmed.
