KYLE MORRIS
WINS $1000.00 PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY IMCA
MODIFIED MAIN
By Scott Daloisio
(Perris, CA, May 29, 2022)
Ramona, California’s Kyle Morris took the
lead on lap nine and led the remaining
11-circuits to claim the $1,000.00 to win
IMCA Modified main event on Saturday night
at Perris Auto Speedway’s “Salute to
Indy.” April winner Matt Hicks of Santee,
California, and Apple Valley, California’s
Randy Thornell rounded out the top three.

Kyle Morris picked up $1,000.00 for
winning the IMCA Modified main event at
Perris Auto Speedway last Saturday, Kenny
Lonngren photo.
When the Steve
Russell green flag opened the 20-lapper,
New River, Arizona driver Brenda Kirby
raced into the lead ahead of Lake
Elsinore, California’s Anthony Merritt. In
a great photo opportunity coming off turn
two on the opener, Morris came out on top
of a five abreast battle for third.
Morris and Hicks upped their positions
to second and third when they passed
Merritt in turn one on the second lap.
Just prior to a yellow flag on lap three,
Hicks shot by Morris for second and set
his sights on Kirby. However, Hicks spun
coming off turn four on the fourth
circuit. Miraculously, the entire field
avoided his stopped car and he was able to
restart at the rear of the field.
When action resumed, Kirby was at the
point with Morris, Brandon James of
Yucaipa, California, local Justin Dunn of
Riverside, and Nipomo, California’s Trevor
Fitz third through fifth. Morris was close
to Kirby, but two times he was grabbed by
the turn one cushion. Not far behind the
lead duo, James and Dunn were staging a
great battle for third when another photo
op. presented itself in turn two when they
were joined by Fitz and Thornell in a
four-abreast formation.
Morris slid
Kirby for the lead on the sixth lap, but
moments later, Fontana, California’s Dale
Sauter stopped in turn one. That proved to
make Morris’s tenure at the point a short
one as they went back to the last
completed lap and Kirby was put back into
the lead for the restart. On the same
yellow, Dunn’s night ended as his #14J
puffed heavy smoke and coasted back to the
pits.
Once the race commenced
again, Kirby was back in the lead until
Morris shot by going into turn one on lap
nine. Moments later, Fitz, who won the
main the previous week at Ventura, also
caught up to Kirby. They became involved
in a hard, but clean side-by-side battle
for the runner-up position for three laps
before Kirby fought him off.
By the
end of the 12th lap, Morris had steered
the Bryan’s Racing Enterprises/DSP
Productions/Niemi Motorsports/Team
Friday/GST #93 to a half straightaway
lead. However, a yellow flag slowed the
field by the end of the lap and put Kirby,
Fitz, Thornell, and Hicks back on his rear
bumper for a restart.
The crowd
got its money’s worth again on the restart
when Morris, Kirby, and Fitz went three
abreast coming off turn two for the lead.
Morris had the edge again by the time they
entered turn three. Kirby and Fitz renewed
their battle for second which continued
until Fitz slid to a stop in turn four and
brought out the final yellow of the race
with five laps to go.
In a rerun,
Morris took off on the restart and pulled
to a comfortable advantage. Hicks and
Thornell got past Kirby for second and
third, but they had no hopes of catching
Morris who waved to the crowd as he raced
under the final checkered flag on the
blustery night. Hicks, Thornell, Kirby,
and James rounded out the top five.
“You need to have interviews with me
more often about how much I don’t win
because obviously, it’s good luck,” the
happy winner, who was resplendent in red
suspenders, joked to infield announcer
Chris Holt. “Every time I saw a car down
there (running on the bottom) I was
holding my breath. It has been so long
since I have been up here, I tried to keep
that out of my mind.”
In the
companion PAS Senior Sprint Car main, Ed
Schwarz of Santa Fe Springs, California
took the lead from Seligman, Arizona’s
Richard McCormick in the second half of
the race for his initial win of 2022.
Schwarz placed second with Palmdale,
California’s Rick Hendrix third. Tyler
Hatzikian of Murrieta, California and
defending series champion Dale Gamer of
Anaheim were fourth and fifth. Stevie
Rogers of Apple Valley, California won the
PAS Young Guns main.
The IMCA
Modifieds, PAS Senior & Young Gun Sprints
