PASSCAR AND IMCA STOCK CAR RACING RETURNS TO PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY SATURDAY

By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, September 7, 2022)
After a short two-week break, the PASSCAR/IMCA Stock Car show returns to Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, September 10th. Saturday’s high-speed show of dirt track racing thrills will include the PASSCAR Super Stocks, PASSCAR American Factory Stocks, IMCA Sport Compacts, and the combined PASSCAR Street Stocks/IMCA Stock Cars. In addition to the racing, at intermission, all the drivers and their cars will be on the front straightaway to pass out free candy to all the children and to sign autographs. Spectator gates at America’s Premiere Dirt Track will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00.

Saturday’s event will be a crucial one for title-contending drivers as there will only be two more stock car shows in 2022. Three of the four classes are super tight. The Factory Stocks have two drivers tied for the top spot and the top four are only separated by six points. The Street Stock leader has a one-point advantage over the second-place driver. There are only four points between the top two in the IMCA Sport Compacts. The only class where a driver has a substantial lead is the Super Stocks.

The Factory Stock battle sees Lanny Savage of Colton and Menifee’s Joseph Pack deadlocked on 83-points. In third and only a single point behind Savage and Pack is Canyon Lake’s David Stites. Stites, who was undefeated in his first three starts this year, was leading the main and on his way to four in a row when engine problems relegated him to sixth two weeks ago. In fourth and only seven points out of the lead is Ethan Kintop of Nuevo. Winchester’s Austyn Jaramillo, who had been at the top since April, broke in practice two weeks ago and dropped to fifth in points.

The PASSCAR Street Stock/IMCA Stock Car class is nearly as tight as the Factory Stocks. In the streets, Moreno Valley’s Brandon Kelly has a narrow one-point lead over Chris Leventis of Rancho Palos Verdes. Kelly, the defending class champion, has won four of the first five races this year. Leventis has finished no worse than fourth and three times he has finished second. Kelly’s dad Doug is third in points and is the only driver besides his son with wins in the class this year. Riverside’s Sean Estes is fourth and rookie Evan Sennett, who also resides in Riverside is fifth. As the IMCA Super Nationals are happening in Boone, Iowa this week, there will only be PASSCAR points awarded on Saturday.

Another rookie, Edward Finger of Temecula, has a four-point lead over Menifee’s Ken McWilliams in the IMCA Sport Compact Class. The IMCA portion of the championship will be decided between Saturday and the final IMCA point race on September 24th. That will work out perfectly for McWilliams who recently joined the Hemet police force and can only race every other week. However, it could cost him in the California State points with the two Perris races wrapped around a Barona Speedway race on the 17th. McWilliams leads Finger by 28 points in the state battle but will have to miss the Barona race.

Rounding out the top five in the sport compacts is rookie Ava Laney of Huntington Beach, a member of the famous Laney racing family, Andrew Schmitz of Hemet, and Buena Park’s Marcus Ford.

The only class where a driver has a clear-cut lead is the Super Stocks. Riverside’s Tyson Talkington leads Ricky Lee of Beaumont by 18 points. The class is the only one to not have a repeat winner thus far in 2022. In five races, five different drivers have posted victories. Leader Talkington and Lee each have one victory going into Saturday’s race. 2014 super stock champion Blaine Whitson of Temecula is third with Riverside’s Tom Davis and Tom Wesolowski of Canyon Lake rounding out the top five.

Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday with racing at 7:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. For kids 6-12 it is just $5.00, and children 5 and under are free. There will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. This event will not sell out. The fairgrounds charges $10.00 for parking.

Advance tickets for all Perris Auto Speedway events, including this Saturday, are on sale now. Fans can order the tickets online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849.
