PASSCAR CHAMPIONS NIGHT THIS SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY

(Perris, CA, October 17, 2022)
As hard as it is to believe, Perris Auto Speedway’s historic 26th season of racing action is hitting the homestretch. All three of the track’s regular shows have one weekend left this year. First off, this Saturday night, October 22nd, will be the annual PASSCAR champions night. The track will crown champions in the super stocks, street stocks, modifieds, sport compacts, and American factory stocks. Spectator gates for the night of dirt track racing and clean family fun will open at 5:00 PM and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00.

Riverside’s Tyson Talkington, a former first division speedway motorcycle racer, can sew up his first-ever PAS title just by placing second in his preliminary super stock heat race. Talkington has bookended the class by winning the first main event of the year and the most recent on September 24th. In the four races sandwiched in between, he has two second-place finishes and a pair of thirds. Those are championship numbers. Beaumont’s Ricky Lee has a tiny chance of catching the leader and no matter what he does, he can finish no worse than second on the year. Talkington’s teammate, Tom Davis of Riverside, is currently third in the championship standings and is only two points ahead of 2014 class champion Blaine Whitson of Temecula. Yucaipa’s Chuck Becker rounds out the top five.

While things are pretty much cut and dried in the super stock title chase, they are anything but that in the street stocks. Defending series champion Brandon Kelly of Moreno Valley carries a slim 3-point advantage over Chris Leventis of Rancho Palos Verdes heading into the last race of the year. Kelly, aka “The Elk Man,” has already won the IMCA Stock Car championship at the track this season and has had an outstanding year winning five of the first six races. In the only race he did not win, his father Doug Kelly, who also resides in Moreno Valley, took home the winner’s trophy. Mathematically the senior Kelly is still in the championship hunt, but for him to steal the title there would need to be catastrophes for his son and Leventis. Keeping the father and son theme alive, Leventis’ son George is fourth in the championship standings. Impressive rookie Evan Sennet of Riverside is holding down fifth.

Fifteen years ago, Randy Thornell won the first-ever IMCA-sanctioned Modified championship at The PAS. He has already won that title for the second time earlier this year. This Saturday he’s going to try to make it two for two in 2022 in the PASSCAR modifieds. Going into the finale, Thornell has a 22-point lead over Guatay’s Andy Papp. With 40-points up for grabs, Papp still has a chance at the title. Bakersfield’s Austin Kiefer, the only driver with two wins in the series this year, is third in the championship standings and is only nine points ahead of his girlfriend, Alyssa Smith of Norco. Cave Creek, Arizona’s Brenda Kirby, who like Smith has PAS winter series championships on her resume, is fifth and only trails Smith by four points.

While things are tight in the sport compact class, the championship could be decided off the track before Saturday night. Temecula’s Edward Finger, a rookie, and the IMCA California State Sport Compact champion for the year, only leads Ken McWilliams of Menifee by five points. However, McWilliams is a new recruit in the Hemet Police Department and may have to work on Saturday. He is the only driver with a mathematical chance of catching Finger. The third spot in the class is rookie Ava Laney of Huntington Beach. She is trailed by Andrew Schmitz of Hemet and Marcus Ford of Buena Park.

In the American factory stocks, all the drivers who are in the top five have a chance at the 2022 championship. Canyon Lake’s David Stites has won four of the five races he has entered this year. He comes into Saturday with a six-point lead over Colton’s Lanny Savage and Nuevo’s Ethan Kintop who are tied for second. If that is not tight enough, Joseph Pack of Menifee is only one point behind Savage and Kintop. Jason Cook of San Jacinto, who will be jumping up to another class in 2023 is fifth.

Be sure to bring out all the neighborhood kids for the free candy giveaway and autograph session on the racetrack with all the drivers at intermission. Mom and dad, be sure to bring a big bag for the kids as the drivers always bring copious amounts of candy to give away.

Adult tickets for Saturday’s race our $20.00. For kids 6 to 12, it is just $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charges $10.00 for parking. We will have plenty of tickets available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. This event will not sell out. For those who wish to purchase advance tickets, they are available 24 hours a day online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7/event/1256349 or by calling 1-800-595-4849.
