PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY OPENS ITS 27TH SEASON THIS SATURDAY – UPDATE ON THE DWR SITUATION By Scott Daloisio (Perris, CA, March 7, 2022) The West Coast’s premiere dirt track, Southern California’s Perris Auto Speedway, will open its 27th season this Saturday night, March 11th, when LKQ Pick Your Part presents Night of Destruction. The night of racing and family fun will feature daring Figure 8s, competitive Mini Stocks, hard-hitting Demo Cross, thrilling Mini Stock Figure 8s, and of course, the crowd favorite, crazy Double Deckers. Doug Allen Photo. “We are looking for a great crowd to kick off what we think is going to be a great 2023 season,” veteran promoter Don Kazarian said. “The only change in Night of Destruction for 2023 will be Mini Stock Figure 8s replacing the Trailer Figure 8 race. The Trailer class dwindled over the past few years while the Mini Stock class has been growing. Some of the Mini Stock guys asked us if they could have their own Figure 8 race. There was a special Figure 8 race for Mini Stocks at the fair last year. After we saw the size of the field, how wild it was, and how much the fans enjoyed it, we decided to add them to this year’s shows. We think the fans will love them.” Defending 2022 Night of Destruction champions Roger Storey (Figure 8) of Riverside, Whittier’s Michael Schattilly (Demo Cross), Kameron Perry of Riverside (Mini Stocks), Brian Kedzior, also of Riverside, (Overall Iron Man) champ and the Ghost Busters champion Double Decker are all expected to be in action on Saturday. In addition to the racing, fans are urged to come out early for the on-track autograph and free candy giveaway session with all the drivers and cars. It will run from 5:15 to 5:45. “I think car counts are going to be way up (in 2023),” Kazarian told host Dave Stall on Sunday’s “Racer Radio Show.” “We have had quite a few new cars when we have been able to have practice sessions over the off-season. You look at Mohave Valley and they had car counts around the low 90s a couple of weeks ago. That is a good sign. I think we will be pleasantly surprised. Everybody is excited and we are just days away from throwing the first green flag.” Adult tickets for Saturday’s Night of Destruction are $20.00. Kids 6-12 get in for $5.00 and children 5 and under are free. The fairgrounds charges $10.00 for parking. Of course, the saga with the DWR’s Lake Perris Project has been on everyone’s mind since last year. People should not fret as it will be business as usual all season long Kazarian explained when he appeared on Dave Stall’s “Racer Radio Show” Sunday. “We are good through the whole year,” Kazarian asserted when Stall asked if the season was only going through September. “We are still conversing with some of our state officials in hoping we can push these guys (DWR) to the table. I cannot even tell you how well they (politicians who fans contacted when asked) responded. There is no doubt that the phone calls and emails helped. It did achieve what we were looking to do. We now have open lines with our state representatives. Before that, nobody was talking to us. Right now it is going through the legal process which sometimes can be painfully slow. We actually have a court date finally. It (the suit) is scheduled to go to trial the first week in September. That is good news and hopefully, it can be resolved before that date.” After Saturday, the 27th season of action at the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval will continue on March 18th when the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series makes the first of its eight appearances on its home track at the annual “Sokola Shootout. The first PASSCAR/IMCA show of the year will take place on April 8th.
