PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY HOSTS THE FIRST PASSCAR/IMCA SHOW OF 2023 THIS SATURDAY By Scott Daloisio (Perris, CA, April 3, 2023) Perris Auto Speedway will host its first PASSCAR/IMCA combined show of 2023 this Saturday night, April 8. The show will feature the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, and American Factory Stocks along with the IMCA Modifieds and Sport Compacts. Spectator gates for the night of racing and family fun will open at 5:00 p.m. and the green flag will fly at 7:00. Saturday’s exciting program will feature the first 2023 appearances of the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Compacts, and Factory Stocks on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval. The PASSCAR Super Stocks and Street Stocks already got a taste of the action when they were part of the show with sprint cars at the track’s 27th season opener three weeks ago. Riverside’s Tom Davis, the 2022 Mohave Valley Raceway champion, won in the Super Stocks. Sean Estes, who also resides in Riverside, placed first in the Street Stocks. The Super Stock class has enjoyed a great resurgence over the past two seasons. In 2019, 11 super stock drivers garnered points. Covid wiped out the 2020 season, but in 2021 the number of drivers scoring points soared to 24. Last year the count grew again when 28 racers earned points. Fifteen entries including defending series champion Tyson Talkington of Riverside, were on hand for the season opener last month. Coming in as the favorite, Talkington saw his hopes go up in smoke when a tire went flat in the main event. Defending Super Stock Champion Tyson Talkington at the March 18th season opener. Doug Allen photo. “We lost a tire,” said Talkington, who won the Mohave Valley opener a couple of weeks prior. “We overheated the brakes and we are pretty sure that is what caused the right rear tire to blow out. It has been an issue (the brakes overheating) and we have been struggling with it since getting the car. I think after the last race at Perris we kind of have it all figured out.” Over the winter Talkington, who has also raced motocross and speedway motorcycles, bought a car from Arizonian Jim Norris. He then sold his championship car from last year to a racer who lives in Parker, Arizona “The competition in the class is growing tremendously,” Talkington stated. “You have to be on your game. You never know who is going to show up. You get regular local guys who are always there. You may get some fast guys from Northern California and Arizona. You may also have some guys who have had their car sitting for a couple of years. They were fast then and they are still fast. It keeps you on your toes.” Talkington, whose daughter Sadie won a mini dwarf championship at Mohave Valley Raceway in 2022, comes into this week’s race tied for fourth in the standings with Corona’s Dillon Osborne. Prior to it being sold, Osborne drove Talkington’s other car at the season opener. They are only two points out of the lead and one point out of third. Davis is tied for the point lead with Yucaipa’s Chuck Becker. Beaumont’s Ricky Lee is third. While Estes won the first street stock main event of the year, he is tied for 2nd in the championship chase with 2021 class champion Brandon Kelly of Moreno Valley. Defending track IMCA and PASSCAR Modified champion Randy Thornell, who lives in Apple Valley, is expected to be on hand to open defense of his titles on Saturday. Last year’s triumphs came 15 years after his first PAS Modified championship run in 2007. David Stites of Canyon Lake will be back to defend his title in the American Factory Stocks. There will be a new champion in the IMCA Sport Compacts this year. 2023 champ Edward Finger of Temecula sold his car and is moving on to another class. In addition to the entertaining night of racing, a PASSCAR/IMCA tradition will take place at intermission when all the drivers park their cars on the front straightaway. Fans are then let onto the track where drivers will be signing autographs and passing out free candy to all the kids in attendance. “It is not only going to be a great night of Racing, but it will be full of family fun as well,” promoter Don Kazarian said. “Having the kids get free candy, autographs, take photos, and sometimes sit in the cars before the drivers come out to race in the main events is huge. Meeting the drivers and putting a face on the car just before they go out on the track for their main gives the kids someone to cheer for. It is a big deal for kids to mingle with the drivers. It creates heroes. The drivers enjoy it as well.” Adult Tickets for Saturday’s show are $20.00. For kids 6 to 12, it is just $5.00 in children 5 and under are free. The fairgrounds charges $10.00 for parking. There will be enough tickets for everyone at the track on Saturday. This event will not sell out. Races from Perris Auto Speedway will not be streamed on Flo Racing in 2023.
