NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION RETURNS TO PERRIS
AUTO SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
By Scott Daloisio
(Perris, CA, May 30, 2022)
Motorized mayhem returns to Perris Auto
Speedway this Saturday night, June 3rd,
when LKQ Pick Your Part Presents the
“Craziest Show on Dirt,” Night of
Destruction. The night of family fun,
crashin,’ and dirt track racin’ will
include daring Outlaw Figure 8 races, Mini
Stock Road Racing, rough and tumble Demo
Cross, no holds barred Mini Stock Figure
8s, and the crowd favorite Double Deckers.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and
the first crash will happen at 7:00.
Fans are urged to come out early and
bring all the kids in the neighborhood for
the 5:15 – 5:45 autograph and free candy
giveaway session on the track with all the
cars and drivers. It is like Halloween in
June.
The story thus far at Night
of Destruction has been Figure 8 driver
Earl Cox Jr. The Norco racer, who began
his career nearly 40 years ago at
legendary Ascot Park in Gardena, currently
leads the Figure 8 championship point
standings. The son of Ascot legend Earl
Cox Sr. has won the first two main events
of the 2023 season. Going into Saturday’s
thrill a minute night of action, Cox has a
12-point lead over defending Figure 8
champion Roger Storey of Riverside and
“The Love Doctor,” Anthony Guisa of
Norwalk who are tied for second. Fourth
place in the Figure 8s is Kaiser
Permanente respiratory therapist Jesse
Gordon of Banning. A three time Figure 8
champion (2017, 2018, 2019), Gordon
purchased a full blown late model to
compete in the Figure 8s this year. He
finished second to Cox on opening night
but was forced to drop out of the main
event with mechanical ills two weeks ago.
Anaheim’s Canyon Multhaupt, who is
contesting his first full season, is
currently fifth.
After two stellar
races in Demo Cross, San Jacinto’s Trebor
Stephens sits on top of the championship
standings. He has driven his #14 truck to
a win and a second place finish in the
first two races and leads Bob Kubik by
11-points. Kubik may not be at Saturday’s
event. After taking the checkered flag in
fourth two weeks ago, he smacked one of
the big tractor tires used as an obstacle
and flipped his car. Defending Demo Cross
series champion Michael Schattilly of
Whittier and Scottsdale, Arizona’s Ken
Caskey, a member of the Mini Van Mafia,
are tied for third. Canyon Multhaupt’s
uncle Rob Multhaupt Jr., another driver
who raced at Ascot, convincingly won the
Demo Cross main two weeks ago. He is
currently fifth in the standings.
In the Mini Stocks, Garden Grove native
Kris Martin leads the way in the road
course standings. Driving his popular “Hot
Wheels” #73, he has won the first two
races of the 2023 campaign and has
parlayed those victories into a nine-point
advantage over Hemet’s Corey Denny coming
into Saturday night’s action. Riverside’s
Darin Green is third. Martin’s son,
Sterling, is in fourth and Brian Motley
sits in fifth.
In addition to
leading the Mini Stock road racing
standings, Martin’s second and third place
finishes put him in the lead in the brand
new Figure 8 Mini Stock class as well.
Menifee’s Bryce Wade Pack is second in
points and trails Martin by six points.
Austin Kinnane of Riverside, a multi-time
Demo Cross winner in years gone by, is
currently ranked third. Corona’s Cameron
Fisher sits fourth. Darin Green and Jake
Gray, the winners of the first two Mini
Stock main events, are tied for fifth.
Lonnie Skillman and Don McCall, the
drivers of the Bug Ya’ Later, have won the
first two main events of 2023 and lead the
points in the popular double Decker class.
Wade-Pack is the overall leader in
the Iron Man Standings (all classes
combined). Kris Martin, Fisher, Kinnane
and Schattilly make up the remainder of
the top five.
