JERRY DODD CHAMPIONS NIGHT THIS SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
By Scott Daloisio

(Perris, CA, October 25, 2023) Every year as the fall days grow shorter, that can only mean one thing for Perris Auto Speedway racing fans. The end of the racing season is close at hand. This Saturday night, October 28th, the popular speed plant will host Jerry Dodd Champion’s Night, which will mark the end of the current campaign for the PASSCAR Super Stocks, Street Stocks, and American Factory Stocks. In addition to the regular festivities, fans are urged to bring children in their Halloween costumes to trick or treat with all of the drivers and cars on the track at intermission. There will be costume contests for newborns to 12-year-olds and those aged 13-15.

Known as “Champion’s Night” since the track's inception in 1996, promoter Don Kazarian asked for and was granted permission by the Dodd family to rename the night “Jerry Dodd Champion’s Night” after the champion driver and car owner passed away in May.

“It is only appropriate that our biggest night of stock car racing has been renamed Jerry Dodd Champion’s Night,” Kazarian said about this season's PASSCAR finale. “After all, cars he owned or built have won 14 championships here at Perris Auto Speedway. That is more titles than any car owner or driver has won here. On top of being a champion car owner, everybody loved him. There was no one more popular in the PASSCAR pits than Jerry. He offered advice whether it be racing setup or strategy to anyone who asked. He especially enjoyed helping with the younger drivers. We are having our Jerry Dodd Champion’s Night on Saturday and two weeks later, Mohave Valley Raceway in Arizona is hosting the Jerry Dodd Classic. That shows you just how popular Jerry was with everyone in the West.”

Of the three classes competing at Jerry Dodd Champion’s Night, the tightest battle entering the season finale is in the Super Stocks. Banning’s Rickie Lee has a slender six-point lead over Yucaipa’s Chuck Becker heading into the finale. In a fantastic display of consistency, in the seven races this year Lee has finished second four times and third three times. Becker, a three-time track modified champion, has won the last two main events in a row with Lee second. A third-generation driver, Becker has three second place finishes to go with the wins and has not finished out of the top five in 2023. Defending Super Stock champion Tyson Talkington of Riverside is third. He still has a mathematical chance to win the title but being 16 points out of the top spot, it would take a near miracle to overcome both Becker and Lee.

Veteran Kris Carnish of Menifee is seeking his first PAS championship and has a nine-point lead over David Stites of Canyon Lake in the American Factory Stocks. For Carnish, it has been by far his best season to date. He has one win, a second-place finish, four third-place results, and a fifth. Stites, the defending champion missed the first race of the campaign and it cost him. Since that time he has had five wins, including the last four races in a row, and a second-place finish. Winchester’s Austyn Jaramillo is third. Jaramillo’s title aspirations can be ended by Carnish placing in the top three in the heat race or just by taking the green flag in the main event.

The only class where the championship has already been decided is in the street stocks. A win at the Southern California Fair guaranteed Chris Leventis of Rancho Palos Verdes his second title in a row. Sean Estes of Riverside is 28 points behind, but the maximum amount of points available on the night is 23. Even if he swept the show and Leventis did not start a race, it would not be enough. Moreno Valley’s Brandon Kelly, a two-time PAS champion, is third in the Street Stock points.

Before the event, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., one of Saturday’s drivers and his car will be at each of the following Tire Pros Auto Service Centers and Bud’s Tire.
